What Does a Chimney Engineer Actually Do? (And Why It Is Different to a Chimney Sweep)

The terms chimney sweep and chimney engineer are often used interchangeably, but they describe quite different roles. Understanding the distinction matters when deciding who to call for a chimney-related problem.

What a Chimney Sweep Does
A chimney sweep's primary function is to clean the flue. They remove the combustion by-products that accumulate inside a chimney during use, most notably soot and creosote. This is an important part of fire safety maintenance and should be carried out regularly on any chimney in active use. However, sweeping is a maintenance service, not a structural one.
What a Chimney Engineer Does
A chimney engineer works on the structure of the chimney itself. Their scope of work covers a much wider range of technical activities.
Chimney building: Constructing new chimneys from scratch, whether for a new stove installation, a house extension, or a replacement stack.
Chimney rebuilding and repairs: Addressing structural deterioration, including spalling brickwork, failed mortar joints, cracked stacks, and damaged flaunching.
Flue lining and relining: Installing or replacing a flue liner to ensure the chimney is correctly sized and properly sealed for the appliance it serves.
Stove installation: Fitting wood-burning and multifuel stoves in compliance with building regulations, including any required chimney alterations.
High access work: Carrying out structural repairs at height, including work on chimney stacks, pots, and caps.
Investigations and structural reports: Assessing the condition of a chimney and providing a written report, which may be required for property sales, insurance claims, or planning purposes.
Drone surveys: Using drone technology to inspect chimney stacks in detail without scaffolding, providing a thorough visual assessment of hard-to-access structures.
When Do You Need a Chimney Engineer?
A chimney sweep is the right call for routine maintenance on an active chimney. A chimney engineer is the right call in any of the following situations: you want to install a wood-burning or multifuel stove; you have noticed visible damage to the chimney stack, mortar, or brickwork; you are buying or selling a property with a chimney and need a structural assessment; you have damp, staining, or debris associated with the chimney; you need a written report for insurance or planning purposes; or your chimney is not drawing properly and you suspect a structural or liner issue.
